PUC Sponsors Building Operator Certification

Training Program in Aroostook County

AUGUSTA, ME – The Maine Public Utilities Commission (PUC) is sponsoring a Building Operator Certification training series in several locations in Maine, including Aroostook County.  The Northern Maine series begins Tuesday, November 5, in Presque Isle, and includes classes in the coming six months there and in Houlton.  The series is aimed primarily at elementary and secondary school building facilities managers.  Some larger hospitals and colleges will attend as well.

The training series will prepare building operations and maintenance staff for certification in energy and resource efficient building systems.  Individuals who successfully complete the training series will be eligible for Building Operator Certification (BOC).

To be certified, participants must attend 8 full-day core classes, complete open book tests, and assigned projects.  Certified building operators demonstrate competence in evaluating building energy consumption, HVAC energy inspection, lighting surveys, indoor air pollutant sources and pathway locations, and facility electrical distribution.

In April, the Legislature passed a law directing the PUC to design and implement programs to promote efficient electricity use throughout Maine.  The Building Operator Certification Program is the latest in a series of efficiency programs being implemented in response to the new efficiency law.

“The Building Operator Certification Program is an important addition to the portfolio of efficiency programs we are providing consumers,” said Tom Welch, PUC Chairman, “and will help Maine’s municipalities and school districts control their electric costs.”  Welch added, “This program, like all our efficiency programs, will help Maine consumers make permanent changes in their energy use.”

For more information on Maine’s electric energy efficiency programs, or to get involved in the development of on-going efficiency programs, contact the PUC at 287-3831 or toll-free at 1-800-452-4699, or visit the PUC website at http://www.state.me.us/mpuc.
