Weatherization

UP TO $5,500 IN REBATES FOR ANY INCOMEUP TO $9,600 IN REBATES FOR LOW- AND MODERATE-INCOME
 

Weatherizing your home can help prevent ice dams, frozen pipes, and drafty rooms. It can also help you stop wasting energy and take control of your heating and cooling costs. Efficiency Maine offers rebates and loans for weatherization projects. Click here to find a contractor near you.

Rebates

Eligibility

Participant

  • Homeowners of any income

Building

  • Townhouse or a 1- to 4-unit residential building located in Maine. Larger buildings, including 5 or more attached condominiums, are not eligible.
  • Space heated the entire heating season
  • Upgrade not part of construction of new home or addition
  • Lifetime limit of $5,500 in rebates per building or townhouse

Installer

  • Residential Registered Vendor for insulation and air sealing

Timeframe

  • Rebate claim form emailed or postmarked within 90 days of project completion

Upgrade (Click for details)

Basement Insulation

  • Defined as basement, crawlspace or other unconditioned space directly below a conditioned living area
  • Upgraded by insulating:
    1. Foundation walls from 2 feet below grade to underside of first floor (including sill and band joist) with minimum 2” rigid or closed-cell spray foam, or
    2. Basement or crawlspace ceiling with either dense-pack insulation or minimum 2” of foam
  • Batt insulation not eligible for rebates
  • Upgrade must be followed by a Building Performance Institute (BPI) Safety Test
  • Code-approved fire protection was added to foam insulation when applicable

Wall Insulation

  • Walls must be insulated to one of the following levels:
    1. Enclosed cavities were filled to capacity with dense-pack insulation
    2. Open cavities were filled to capacity with open-cell spray foam
    3. Closed-cell spray foam was applied to within 1.5” of the surface of cavities that were subsequently enclosed
    4. Walls were covered by a minimum of 2” of rigid foam insulation (applied over the studs)
  • Batt insulation not eligible for rebates
  • Upgrade must be followed by a Building Performance Institute (BPI) Safety Test
  • Code-approved fire protection was added to foam insulation when applicable

Attic Insulation

  • Attic must be air sealed prior to or as part of insulating the attic
  • Attic must be insulated to one of the following levels:
    1. Open attic insulated to at least R49
    2. Enclosed cavities filled to capacity with dense-pack insulation
    3. A minimum of 5” of closed-cell spray foam
    4. Closed-cell spray foam applied to within 1.5” of the surface of cavities that were subsequently enclosed
  • Batt insulation not eligible for rebates
  • All exhaust fans must be ducted outside the home
  • Upgrade must be followed by a Building Performance Institute (BPI) Safety Test
  • Code-approved fire protection must be added to foam insulation when applicable

Getting Started

  1. Find a Residential Registered Vendor
  2. Decide on upgrade details
  3. Arrange for financing (optional)
  4. Complete the upgrade
  5. Submit the Rebate Claim Form
  6. Allow 6 weeks for rebate processing

Efficiency Maine does not warranty the performance of rebated upgrades. Program and incentives subject to change or termination. Please allow six weeks for rebate processing. Incomplete information may delay or disqualify your rebate. Efficiency Maine reserves the right to verify installation and perform an inspection.
