Guidance for Disposal of Energy Efficiency Bulbs and Lamps
|
American homes contain over 3 billion light fixtures! Lighting alone accounts
for about 10-15% of total household electricity use. A typical household
spends $110 per year on energy for lighting. Therefore, it is not a surprise
that throughout the United States and the world, governments, utility
companies and consumers are looking for ways to reduce the amount of energy
consumed.
One of the most effective ways
to achieve this is through the use of technologies that utilize less energy
to produce the same results without any inconvenience or sacrifice of
comfort. Efficiency Maine has embarked on a campaign to increase the sale
and use of energy efficient products across the State.

Efficiency Maine’s Residential Lighting Program
enlists the participation of and works closely with manufacturers
and lighting retailers to encourage them to produce and sell energy
efficient lighting products to the residents of Maine.
The
program is now offering a $2 instant rebate on ENERGY
STAR qualified compact fluorescent bulbs (CFLs) and $12 off
ENERGY STAR qualified outdoor CFL hard-wired fixtures, indoor hard-wired
fixtures, table lamps, floor lamps, torchieres and hardwired ceiling
fans with integrated light kits.
Participating
retailers will deduct the rebate from the customer’s bill at the
store, and Efficiency Maine will then reimburse the retailer. |
Program
Benefits
By choosing ENERGY STAR labeled products, consumers can keep utility bills
down (i.e. save money) and help the environment at the same time.
CFLs use fewer watts than incandescent
light bulbs, yet have a light output, measured in lumens, equivalent if
not superior to that of incandescent light bulbs. For example, a 27-watt
CFL provides about 1800 lumens, compared to 1750 lumens from a 100-watt
incandescent lamp. In addition, CFLs offer the following advantages when
used properly: they last up to 10 times longer, use two-thirds less energy,
and produce 90% less heat, while producing more light. The main advantage
of using compact fluorescent bulbs, however, is to save money.
