Energy Audits for Maine Business

Efficiency Maine provides energy audits to help small and medium-sized commercial, municipal, non-profit, and manufacturing facilities. Efficiency Maine has allocated some of its federal grant funds to offer no-cost, walk-through audits to businesses that are interested in learning what can be done to lower their energy consumption.

To receive an audit, a company must

• Meet the Business Energy Audit Program eligibility requirements:
- Employ 50 or fewer FTE employees OR earn less than $5 million in annual revenue
- Must have a facility that is at least 1,000-square-feet in size
- Have no residential components to the business space that will be audited

• Submit a completed Audit Intake Form as follows:
- Mail or fax a printed PDF Form* or
- Submit an electronic form
• Provide a copy of one year’s worth of utility and heating bills prior to receiving the audit
• Provide Efficiency Maine with a Federal Tax ID number

Because of limited resources, audits are not available to schools, hospitals, private residences, or businesses with residential components, such as apartment houses, camps, or condominiums.

The Energy Audit Process

The objectives of a walk-through audit are to identify and develop modifications that will reduce the energy use and/or cost of operating a building. The audit findings will provide information to help guide the building owner/operator in selecting energy upgrades and in working with contractors to move forward with a project.

The energy audit process includes the following:

- Collect and analyze historical energy use.
- Study the building and its operational characteristics.
- Identify potential modifications that will reduce energy use and/or costs.
- Prepare a ranked list of potential energy upgrades.
- Prepare a report to document the energy audit process, its findings and recommendations.

An energy auditor will visit your facility to interview personnel and review the lighting, machinery, insulation and other elements of the facility that affect energy consumption. The process usually takes 2 to 3 hours.

Efficiency Maine will deliver a written report with recommendations for potential energy savings along with information on financial options available to help businesses make the suggested measures.

TYPICAL AUDIT RESULTS: Typically, businesses reduce their energy use by 15 to 25% through cost-effective measures.
