About Demand Management
Demand management delivers benefits to Mainers by reducing electricity use on the electric grid when there is high demand or congestion. Efficiency Maine offers incentives to eligible homes and businesses in exchange for participating in demand response events.
That means that on a day when there is high demand for electricity, Efficiency Maine asks participating residents and businesses to curtail their consumption of electricity. The following are examples of demand management activity during a demand response event in which a home or business can participate:
- A commercial facility turns off one or more of its electricity-consuming machines or appliances. See Commercial Curtailment for more details.
- A home or business uses stored energy from its small (≤20kW) on-site battery system. See Small Battery Management for more details.
- A business uses stored energy from its large (>20kW) on-site battery system. See Large Battery Management for more details.
- A home intentionally avoids charging its electric vehicle while demand on the electric grid is high, opting instead to charge earlier or later in the day. See Managed Charging for Electric Vehicles for more details.
